modern movement conservation
Frencham Common, Surrey
This important Grade 2-listed house of 1894 by CFA Voysey is perhaps more ‘Arts and Crafts’ than ‘Modern Movement’, yet the wide spreading eaves and sweeping roof, the white walls and the spatial feel of the house prefigure the Modern Movement. It has been altered a number of times, not least by Voysey himself, and the owner had it in mind to make a further alteration to provide a conservatory-like dining area at the southern end of the house. James Dunnett was able to find a more convenient and architecturally less damaging location behind an existing wall to the north of the house, and consent was obtained – but his involvement ended at that point.
